A Journey with Reiki

Many people come to me with the simple question: “What is Reiki”?

The correct way of defining Reiki is as follows: It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It also promotes healing and is administered by “laying on of hands.” Techniques such as this have been practiced for thousands of years.

My personal journey concerning Reiki began approximately three years ago. Reiki has entered my life for many reasons and is also a tool in my life that I have used many times to help guide others through many changes in their own lives.

I first encountered Reiki when I was in search of an alternative way to manage my health. Even though I was under doctor’s care, I was still not satisfied. I always thought to myself, ‘there has to be an addition to my medical care.’ I found the addition within alternative therapy. Reiki was included and this caught my attention by accident when I was at a local herb shop shopping for a few things I thought I needed. I encountered a woman there at the shop that was a Reiki Master Teacher. To make along story short, I didn’t have a clue what Reiki was or what it was used for. But after speaking with her I was intrigued by what I heard and signed up for my first Reiki class and was wondering to myself … ‘what the heck did I get myself into?’ Now, three years later and two other classes after that, I am now a Reiki Master and I have learned not only to take care of myself but help show others how to take care of themselves as well.

However one might still wonder… just what does Reiki do? What does it feel like and can it really make a person feel better?

Therefore, I always tell my clients that there are three things that they may feel from my hands. You may feel warmth and tingling, coolness to the places I touch, or nothing at all. Some of my clients are so very open to this method of alternative healing, that they embrace the universe’s energy and what is has to offer. Others I have worked on are more skeptical, but are willing to give it a shot. Each person is very different when they receive a Reiki treatment. For example, some are emotionally touched to the point where they cry. Others are left with a quiet comfort and a gentle smile and a peace within. Then there are others that have drifted off into a deep sleep only to say that they feel better after they are awakened.

Also, some people claim that their pain will go away for a day or two, even weeks to months at a time whereas others find their energy levels increasing each day. Next, one might wonder if Reiki is a cure all and if they should give up their doctor. The answer is no, never give up your general medical care. Reiki is only an addition. Nurses and practitioners who work in hospitals can also learn this in their ability to help patients while they are hospitalized.

Lastly and conclusively, Reiki is an addition to my life I would highly recommend to anyone that suffered any kind of pain (physical or emotional), including but not limited to a headaches, sore muscles or chronic illness. Reiki can help a person on whatever level they may need assistance. Whether it is physical, mental, spiritual or emotional, one can utilize Reiki for virtually any level of healing one needs.

Reiki in my own words is this …

“Self love and a love that comes from the heavens above”.
